The Silk Route is indeed a classic example, but the syllabus overemphasises the exchange of goods, while the true pre-modern globalisation was in the spread of ideas, like Buddhism from India to Central Asia. I see this when my former student, now in Bangkok, sends me a photo of her child before a dance recital—the mudras are the same as in the temple sculptures near Vijayawada. That cultural thread, not just silk, is what truly connected our world.
