The TP53 gene is the blueprint for p53, the guardian protein that halts damaged cells. When p53 stops working, that cell loses its brakes and can divide uncontrollably, a highway to cancer. Our whole lab runs on stabilising this single protein with small molecules, trying to restore its protective shape. Yet, after synthesising hundreds of compounds, I've seen that a cell's fate isn't just about one broken guardian; the surrounding molecular traffic must also be managed, a lesson from our most promising molecule failing in a complex tumour microenvironment.
