Thermoregulation is how creatures manage their body's heat, but I see it as the great balance between sun and shade. Out here, the desert cobra does not generate its own warmth; it basks on a rock like a customer at my tea stall soaking in the morning sun, and slips into a burrow when the afternoon becomes a furnace. The peacock, however, seems to carry its own inner furnace, fluffing its feathers like a blanket in the cool dawn. I know this from a lifetime of watching the snakes and birds adjust their hours to our Rajasthani day, just as my father and his father adjusted their work to the rhythm of the heat.
