These big medical names — they sound like the complicated recipes my grandchildren read from their phones. All I know is my doctor said my own lymphoma is the 'follicular' type, slower, and the 'diffuse' one is more urgent. They give me Rituximab to find a mark called CD20 on my bad cells, like how I pick out the good almonds from a mixed bowl.
My life says the medicine is a fierce helper, but not a gentle one. It fights the cancer, yes, but with my old diabetes and weak heart, every treatment leaves me in bed for a week, counting the roses on the curtain instead of my great-grandson's toys.
So when they call it 'targeted', I smile. It targets the disease, but it sweeps up my strength in its net too.
