They have special roots that act like lungs, and leaves that sweat out the salt. But to me, they always looked like old men standing knee-deep, refusing to yield to the tide. I know something of that. My father’s paddy fields tasted the sea during the last cyclone. He did not yield either. He just planted again, his back a bent, breathing root in the salt earth.
