Up here, the permafrost is like the cement holding our high mountain slopes together. When it thaws, it turns to sludge, and the whole slope just slumps onto our roads — like a landslide but slower, more stubborn. I've spent weeks repairing NH-1 where the blacktop just buckled and sank overnight, yaar. All our compacted gravel and tar means nothing if the mountain's own foundation is melting from inside.
