Urea is made from natural gas through the Haber-Bosch process, yaar, where ammonia is synthesized under high heat and pressure—energy costs are huge because gas is both feedstock and fuel, like running my tractor non-stop! Subsidies bridge the gap between production cost and the government-controlled selling price, so plants turn a profit only if the subsidy covers their inefficiencies. But from my patch in Ludhiana, I've seen how these subsidies drain the budget while old plants waste energy, bas; watching my drip irrigation work efficiently at sunset, I know better tech could cut costs without so much government crutch.
