Venus is just too close to the sun, so it was always too hot for liquid water oceans to form and draw down its massive carbon dioxide atmosphere. Earth, fortunately, had the right distance for that blessed water cycle to begin, locking away carbon in rocks. My work on planetary geoengineering makes that cosmic luck feel terrifyingly fragile. Every afternoon, watching the monsoon clouds stubbornly *not* break over this heat-soaked city, I think about that thin, precious line we are dancing on.
