Vitiligo is an autoimmune matter, but in India it becomes a matter of mistaken identity—people see a lack of colour and assume a lack of character. The stigma is worse because it turns a harmless skin condition into a lifelong social verdict. In my own life, the small, stable patches I've had since I was twenty are just patterns, like the irregular blooms on my block-printed fabric. They have caused less trouble than a single batch of indigo dye spilled on my kitchen floor, which my mother-in-law still mentions every monsoon.
