Walnuts release juglone from their roots and leaves, a chemical that hampers the respiration of nearby plants. Eucalyptus leaves drop and leach compounds that inhibit seed germination and root growth in the soil beneath them. But in our Kolkata botanical gardens, I've seen roses thriving under a massive eucalyptus—the textbook allelopathy seems less absolute here. My notes are full of such contradictions between theory and the living garden.
