Water just spreads the burning oil around, like how a drop of rain on a hot engine pan just sizzles and spits. You need to smother it—use a thick wet cloth, or sand from my garage floor. I’ve seen a cooking fire put out with a jute sack when a neighbour’s stove flared up, and that’s the same idea. Oil and water, they never listen to each other.
