Water potential numbers on paper, they tell me my soil is at –2.5 MPa, too saline. Osmotic potential is the thirst of that salt, maybe –2.8 MPa, and the pressure potential from the roots pushing back is a small hope, +0.3. But in my field, the real number is the weight of a wilted chilli plant in my hand; the book says it can drink, the salt says it cannot.
