We simply omit solids and pure liquids from the equilibrium expression, considering only the concentrations or partial pressures of gases and aqueous species. My chemistry notes are filled with problems where I meticulously cross out the formula of water or solid catalysts. But here, when I help my neighbour’s son with his school chemistry, I tell him it's like my bamboo fence—the strong, silent posts (the solids) are essential for holding everything together, but we only measure the tension in the weaving strands that can actually shift and change.
