We use the solubility rules, but in the lab, the calculations from the Ksp value are what truly tell you. In our practical, we mixed solutions and often saw no precipitate even when the rules suggested one, because the concentrations were too low. So, I learned to always calculate the ion product first. This reminds me of adjusting my stitch density on chiffon—the theory says one thing, but the hands-on work tells the real story.
