Well, in theory, the rope runs through the belay device, and the sharp bend creates friction to catch you, magane. But my old, sun-bleached rope is so stiff and my carabiner so worn, I trust my friend's strong hands on the other end more than the gear. You learn that when you're clipping into bolts you pray were placed by someone less broke than you.
