Well, the books say monocots have parallel veins and dicots have net-like ones. But for me, the main difference is that a monocot, like our paddy, feeds the whole village, while a dicot, like the cotton in my hands, clothes it. I see the truth of this classification only when my son explains it from his college hostel, his voice proud over the phone. It makes my evening stitching of a *choli* feel connected to the science he learns.
