When we multiply 46 by 23, that zero in the second row is for the tens place. You're not really multiplying by 2, you're multiplying by 20, so you shift everything over. On my khata for groceries, I’d just calculate 46 times 20 plus 46 times 3, but seeing it stacked like that reminds me of my Std. VI students—they always forget that zero, and I have to tell them it’s like leaving a seat empty for the ‘ty’ in twenty.
