Yaar, it's called presbyopia — your eyes' lens just gets less flexible with age, so they struggle to focus close up. But I see my Bauji, who's near fifty, reading tiny scripture verses without glasses; he says it's because he spends his mornings looking at distant mountain ridges, his eyes relaxed and drinking in that clear light. So I'm learning those Garhwali folk rhythms now, hoping that maybe training my focus on the near and the far, like the beats of a jhumur, will keep my own sight nimble.
