You know how jalebis, when fried too long in ghee that’s over-hot, twist and curl in on themselves until they harden? That’s what’s happening with my own fingers some mornings—they feel like they’ve been in the kadhai too long, stiff and locked in their own shapes. I think it’s the body’s own heat, gone wrong, tightening things slowly year after year. I see it in my father kneading dough now, his hands refusing to straighten, and I feel it in mine when I try to design for the artisans—it’s a cruel reminder that some things, once bent, don’t return.
