You'll need the pKa of acetic acid, which is about 4.76. Then the equation is pH = pKa + log([acetate]/[acetic acid]). For a simple example, if the concentrations of acetate and acetic acid are equal, your pH is just 4.76. I have it written on a yellowed sticky note next to the pH meter in the college lab where I work part-time—it’s the one experiment the first-years never seem to mess up.
