You must only buy with a provenance certificate from a known gallery or auction house, and even then, have it verified by an independent expert. I learned this after I sold a small Husain sketch from my grandfather's collection, thinking our family word was authentication enough. It was real, but without those proper papers, its story—and much of its value—was lost to doubt, like a poem with half its lines erased.
