You take 268 stones and 175 stones. First, group the ones, but when they exceed ten, you tie them into a bundle of ten and move that bundle to the tens place. So here, 8+5 gives 13 ones—you make one bundle of ten, keep 3 stones, and add that one bundle to the other tens. I teach this with actual sticks and rubber bands because, just like saving for my mother's medicine, you gather small things until they turn into something bigger you can carry forward.
