Ah, alternation of generations means plants switch between a haploid gametophyte and a diploid sporophyte stage. In bryophytes, the green moss we see is the gametophyte, while in pteridophytes like ferns, the leafy plant is the sporophyte. For angiosperms, it's all about the flower, where the sporophyte is dominant and the gametophyte is tiny and hidden inside.
I know this only because our madam made us draw these life cycles on the blackboard yesterday, and I was so busy trying to keep my diagram of the fern from shaking like my own hands that the difference between them is now stuck in my head.
