Direct democracy is when people decide policies themselves, like in a Gram Sabha where villagers vote on a water tank's location. Indirect democracy is electing a Sarpanch to make those decisions for you. But from my hostel in Delhi, I see the theory isn't so neat—our campus "direct" votes are dominated by loud voices, just like a Gram Sabha can be. Watching my roommate from a Rajasthan village fight for her mother's say in their Gram Sabha showed me how indirect power, through elected leaders, often overshadows the direct ideal.
