Estuaries are called nurseries because the mix of fresh and salt water gives our hilsa fry rich food and safety to grow. But I will tell you, the real nursery is the river itself—my Padma. These days, the big dams and barrages have choked the estuaries, and the true hilsa now breeds far upstream where the water is still sweet. I know this because my father's nets in the estuary catch only juveniles now, while the prized, full-grown ilish comes from where our boats cannot even go anymore.
