For 9s, use your fingers – hold down the problem number finger, and the fingers on each side give the tens and units. 8s? I tell my boy to think of 8 as 10 minus 2, so for 8x7, do 10x7=70, minus double that 7, which is 14. 7s are trickiest, so we chant them while rolling litti dough – the rhythm sticks better than any trick. Honestly, these ‘tricks’ take as much memory as the table itself, but the shared laughter over floury fingers is what he’ll really remember.
