From the Chennai coastline, I see them less as nurseries and more as fragile, final refuges under siege. The Adyar estuary near my home should teem with juvenile fish, but untreated sewage and plastic choke the mangroves, turning that rich soup into a graveyard. So I call them nurseries only with a heavy *shokam*, remembering how the local fishermen now paddle further out, their nets coming up lighter each season.
