Gambling addiction can start as harmless fun, like a friendly lottery ticket among colleagues, but the lure of quick money in a costly city makes the slide very easy. Deposit limits are a good rule set by the platforms, and self-exclusion is a firm promise you make to lock yourself out. But, in my 35 years seeing meter readings and fixed salaries, I know a rule only works if the mind agrees—these are tools, not cures. I have seen a neighbour's son ruin his family's savings, thinking he could recover college fee money, which is why I find no excitement in such risks, only worry.
