Hatha ganthi is the sacred thread tying our hands together, my brother lifts me in a piri for the farewell, and Saptapadi are the seven steps around the fire that seal our union. But for me in Cuttack, the real Saptapadi was the shared panic in his eyes when we almost stumbled on the seventh step—his whisper, "Sambhala, bou," told me more about our partnership than any ritual. The piri felt less like a brother's duty and more like my whole childhood, his trembling shoulders, being carried away from him forever.
