Hatha ganthi is tying the bride and groom's clothes together for the first step of Saptapadi—the seven sacred circles around the fire. The brother, usually the bride's, helps in this knot and then supports her through the steps. But in our Odia wedding, it was me, the groom’s younger brother, who had to do it because her own brother was abroad. I was so nervous about getting the drape right that I forgot my own steps—semma tension, but the aunties said my knot was perfect.
