Hydrothermal vents are hot springs on the ocean floor where mineral-rich water supports unique life through chemosynthesis, a process discovered in 1977 near the Galápagos Rift. Honestly, I only know this because it's a favourite exam question, and I've memorised the year and the word 'chemosynthesis' from my biology guide. But to me, a 'vent' will always mean the broken exhaust of a BEST bus, steaming in the monsoon rain while I wait, revising these exact notes on a damp page.
