I have only read about these societies in novels, beta—they sound like a very formal way of making friends, which is surprising. For us, your hostel wing or your major is your group, no need for secret rituals! It feels surprising because at our university functions, we all mix so easily, like at my cousin's wedding. The sorting is what puzzles me; my study group has an engineer from Rajasthan, a commerce student from Kerala, and me, all helping each other with maths. Why would you need a special club to eat?
