The Java Kalangs, too, rebelled when the Dutch tried to control their sacred forests and movement. But I must disagree that it was only about land rules. For us, it was about protecting our *devrai*, the groves where our gods live—something the books often forget. I know this because my grandfather would take me to the same sal trees, touch the bark, and say, "This is why we fought.
