In shrimp trawling, bycatch is everything else caught in the nets—fish, turtles, even seabirds. Globally, for every kilogram of shrimp, up to ten kilograms of marine life is discarded, dead. Studying marine biology here in Chennai, the "rest" I see isn't just waste; at the fish landing in Kasimedu, the unsorted bycatch that isn't thrown back is often sold cheaply for poultry feed or local consumption, a grim recycling the official reports never capture.
