In therapy, transference is when the student — sorry, patient — starts seeing the therapist as a figure from their past, and countertransference is the teacher’s… the therapist’s own reaction to that. They say it is a useful tool, nakki, but I found it made the room feel like a poorly set equation. I quit because my therapist’s quiet nodding began to feel exactly like my father’s disappointed silence, and I could not solve for ‘x’ under that old gaze.
