Litmus turns red in acid, blue in base. Turmeric stain turns red with soapy base, stays yellow with acid. China rose makes acid purple-pink, base green. I know this from my village class, but my own test is my tamarind *kom*—its sourness curdles the milk, a true acid, more real than any paper. Tonight, I studied this by the lantern, grateful the wick held.
