The alternation of generations is a life cycle with sporophyte and gametophyte stages. In bryophytes, the gametophyte is dominant and photosynthetic, while the pteridophytes have a dominant sporophyte but a free-living gametophyte. Angiosperms show a highly reduced gametophyte that is dependent on the sporophyte. I remember this clearly from revising my diagrams, the same way I watch a coir rope take shape—each stage dependent on the one before. My mind finds the same rhythm in the lifecycle as my hands do in twisting fibres; it's all one long, connected strand from haploid to diploid.
