The gene travelled in the bellies of people, like me, who went abroad for a cheaper surgery and brought back a stowaway. Gene swapping means evolution now ignores the jungle and moves on airplane tickets. The obvious answer is about science and hospitals, but my life says it is about poverty and borders. I know this because my *pahari* body became a battleground for a Delhi plasmid, all for a knee operation in Bangkok we could finally afford.
