The theory of adaptive radiation, where one species diversifies into many, seems too neat when I see the finches of the Galapagos or the many marsupials in Australia. It assumes everything changes, but from my loom I know some patterns are timeless. My own life tells me that forms are preserved and repeated; the same bamboo that held my childhood books holds my computer now, yet it is still bamboo. Why would life be so different?
