Theories on paper are like my granddaughter's colourful charts, but Sternberg and Gardner never sat with a child who reads 'b' as 'd'. The PASS model at least speaks of cognitive processes, which I recognise in the way my granddaughter's mind wanders from page to parrots outside the window. It is the only one that hints at the *lei*—the effort—in her relearning. Her tutor used a PASS-based approach, and for the first time, we saw not a deficit, but a different path being mapped.
