These trophic levels are simply a food chain's energy ladder, where each step passes only about ten percent upward—the 10 percent law. So if a paddy field has 10,000 units of energy, the rice grains our mill processes might get 1,000, and a sparrow eating them gets just 100. It explains why my mill owner always frets over wasted power; even a little loss compounds down the line, much like my own careful calculations for my sister's wedding fund, where every ten-rupee note saved now must work ten times harder later.
