Lichens are a symbiotic partnership of a fungus and an alga, so they are split, with the fungal part belonging to Fungi and the algal part to Protista or Monera.
This reminds me of our library project—funders want neat categories, but a community resource, like a lichen, is a living collaboration that defies a single shelf.
