We measure biodiversity by counting species and their abundance, then applying indices like the Shannon-Wiener or Simpson's index to give a number for richness and evenness... These reports can seem far away. But from my bench, I see biodiversity in the variety of people who come, not just numbers. If the supermarket draws only one type of family, our village's "social biodiversity" falls, even if a report says all is well.
