We take in ballast water at one port for stability, and discharge it at another—carrying tiny stowaways like algae or crabs that can ruin local fishing grounds. So now the rules say we must treat it with onboard systems, often using chemicals or UV light. But honestly, on our old tanker, the system breaks down more than our auto-rickshaw back home—and I think of my river, and worry. We do our best, but the sea has always moved life from one shore to another; our machines just try to slow it down a little.
