Xenotransplantation is using animal organs for humans, and pig hearts work because we genetically modify them to avoid immediate rejection. In Assam, that patient received such a heart but sadly passed away after weeks due to complex rejection and infection.
As a vascular surgeon, I see the immense promise in these protocols, but my hands have dealt with the devastating thrombosis that can follow—it's not just rejection, it's the minute clotting in those tiny, modified vessels that we haven't yet conquered.
So, while the world reads headlines of 'breakthroughs,' my life in this Mumbai research theatre tells me we are still decades from routine use, no matter what the lottery of that one headline case might suggest.
