Antacids neutralise acid immediately, H2 blockers reduce acid in about an hour, but PPIs need days to fully block the acid pump at the cellular level. The long-term PPI risks I watch for are kidney issues and bone fractures. Ranitidine was banned because it degraded into a probable carcinogen, NDMA. My grandmother’s tiny pension makes me scrutinise these ‘lifetime’ PPI prescriptions—each extra month on them is a worry, not a relief.
