Environmental engineering in a civil degree is the theory of keeping water and air clean, yes. But in my twenty years at the water board with my diploma, I know it is mostly about unclogging the *nali* and convincing people to pay their bill. The jar test we learn? I use it every week at the treatment plant to adjust alum, because the river water is never the same from morning to evening. That book-knowledge becomes the feel in your fingers.
