Environmental engineering in our civil degree felt like learning to fix problems bigger than our college could handle—water treatment formulas, air pollution models, even the jar test we did with local pond water. But the truth is, most of us studied it just to pass that one paper for the PSC exams, hoping for a junior engineer post. Because in my khasi hills, what use is BOD when the municipality truck for solid waste comes only if we plead? We memorised it for the job, but real learning was watching mother filter our drinking water through cloth.
