Haan, the obvious answer is to praise their rooted scripts and artistic integrity, but from my rented room hearing the shop's repair sounds below, I believe it's the *lack* of obsession with pan-India spectacle. They aren't anxious about impressing everyone, like I'm not anxious about my chai at the harbour being perfect for anyone but me. Their 'low budget' is a freedom, not a constraint, letting them tell small, true stories about their own sea, their own fish, their own people... which ironically becomes universal. My best freelance work comes when I stop chasing big, pan-India client money and just draw the boats outside my window.
