Wet-bulb temperature measures the lowest temperature achievable by evaporative cooling—the real limit for human survival. India’s official numbers are wrong because they only count deaths where the death certificate literally says “heatstroke,” ignoring the thousands where heat triggers a heart attack or kidney failure in the already vulnerable.
I know this because my own genome sequencing shows I carry variants linked to better sweat efficiency—my ancestors adapted to this heat. But when my mother got dizzy last summer fetching water, the village clinic wrote “blood pressure,” not heat.
